Dr. Virendra Kumar, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, introduced the Central Sector Scheme SMILE Scheme for Transgender Community for Livelihood and Enterprise at BHIM Auditorium, Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, to help transgender people and beggars. About SMILE Scheme for Transgender Community

The ‘Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for the Welfare of Transgender Persons’ is a sub-scheme that involves a set of parts. It offers scholarships to transgender students from 9th grade through post-graduation to help them finish their education. The PM-DAKSH scheme includes provisions for developing skills and wellbeing. In collaboration with PM-JAY, Composite Medical Health offers a complete package that includes gender-reaffirmation surgeries at select hospitals. “The establishment of a National Portal and Support center would provide required knowledge and solutions to the transgender society’s and beggars’ problems

Objectives of SMILE Scheme for Transgender Community

The SMILE scheme was design to assist transgender individuals who beg. The scheme aims to improve and broaden the reach of rights that provide the specific group with the legal protection they need and the assurance of a secure future. It considers the different dimensions of identity, education, occupational opportunities, medical services, and housing that are require for social welfare.

Features of SMILE Scheme for Transgender Community

Some of the key features of the Schemes are as follows:

SMILE Scheme for Transgender Community Benefits 

The scheme considers different dimensions of identity, medical care, education, occupational opportunities, and shelter to provide the social security that is require. From 2021-22 to 2025-26, the Ministry has set aside Rs. 365 crore for the scheme. Two sub-schemes are includes in this umbrella scheme, which is overseen by the Department of Social Justice and Empowerment. These are the ‘Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation for Transgender Persons’ and the ‘Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of Beggars. As a progressive and developing society, it is our responsibility to honor the identity and dignity of all segments of society,” Dr. Virendra Kumar said. 

The Ministry has ensure that every need of the transgender community and people who engage in begging is met in the most professional manner possible.  The establishment of a Transgender Protection Cell in each state will monitor cases of offenses and ensure that they are promptly register, investigated, and prosecuted, the Union Minister said.
