Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship 2023: Apply Online, Reward

The Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship was edited in December 1980 by the UN General Assembly Resolution 35/201. It was Formerly known as the DPI Training Programme for broadcasters and journalists from developing countries. The programming was renamed in 2003 in honor of Reham al-Farra, a 29-year-old Jordan Public Information officer who was killed on 19 August 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad. Since its founding in 1981, the fellowship has been awarded to 611 journalists from 186 countries. Upon completion of the program, fellows are expected to continue working in journalism and promote a better understanding of the United Nations in their home countries. The program does not provide basic skill training as all fellows are working journalists.

About UN Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship 2023

The Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship was known as the DPI Training Programme for broadcasters and journalists from developing countries. The fellowship is a unique opportunity for young journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition to cover the United Nations. The fellowship is host every year in autumn at UN headquarters. The program brings a select group of journalists to New York to cover the opening of the general assembly for the news outlets. The program also arranges visits to various news organizations such as the New York Times, Democracy Now!, and BuzzFeed. 

Due to covid-19, the RAF Fellowship went virtual for the first time in its history in 2020. A special program organizes for RAF aluminum on its 40th anniversary. The program focuses on UN issues such as Global Health, climate change, refugees, and human rights.

Benefits of Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship

During the 3- week program fellows get an opportunity to attend special briefings, interview senior officers, and exchange ideas with colleagues from around the world. Followers have met with the UN Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, President of the General Assembly, and permanent representatives to the United Nations. 

Eligibility Criteria 

To meet the eligibility criteria the candidate must follow the following:

  • The age of the candidate must be between 22 and 35 years old.
  • The applicant must be a full-time working journalist.
  • Be fully proficient in written or Oral English.
  • Be able to connect virtually daily for 3 weeks during working hours at the New York Times from around mid-September to the beginning of October 2023.
  • To be a national of a developing country or a country in transition, as defined by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
