What Is Clarendon Scholarship 2023?
Clarendon offers 170 new scholarship opportunities each and every year for the outstanding graduate scholarship. These scholarships are primarily available for outstanding Oxford students but the scholarship has high competition. The candidates are selected for these scholarships on the basis of their academic performance and the potential they have. The candidates are not given any restrictions on their nationality or residence. Even if you are obtaining a part-time degree you can apply for the Clarendon Scholarship opportunity and you will be provided with the benefit if you are successfully getting admission to Oxford. The candidates also do not need to submit a separate application for this scholarship because they are automatically considered for this scholarship if they apply for their admission in December or January.

Scholarship Timeline
The candidates need to follow the following scholarship timeline in order to consider for the Clarendon scholarship:-
- You need to apply by the December or January deadline, whichever is relevant to your course, to consider a Clarendon scholarship.
- Your application to your course will consider by the academics working in your proposed field of study. They will assess the academic quality and suitability of your application.
- The department will make the final decision on your graduate place and will notify you of an outcome.
- In parallel, academics within your department will determine who to nominate to the division for a Clarendon scholarship based on the selection criteria.
- The process varies between the University’s academic divisions and the Department for Continuing Education, but each meets in February or March to review the departmental scholarship nominations.
- The academic divisions assess the nominations on their academic merit and future potential and the top-ranked departmental nominees within the division are shortlisted for Clarendon.
- Once the shortlist is confirmed, the Clarendon Fund Administrator will contact successful applicants and will provide the scholarship offer letter.
- If you get offer (and accept) a Clarendon scholarship, this means your funding is now secure, as long as you meet the conditions of your offer of a place to study at Oxford.
- During April, May, and sometimes into June, Clarendon Partnership Awards are match to scholars depending on the award requirements. No further information is requires of Clarendon offer holders.
- Once each scholar’s unique funding package is confirms, they will receive the funding breakdown letter (aka a ‘CB2’) outlining the funding arrangements. Final college placements will also confirm alongside partnership awards.
- All successful Clarendon candidates will contact via email. The majority of offers are sent out by the end of April of each year.
- Due to the number of eligible applicants, unsuccessful students will not contact. If you have not heard from us by June, please assume that unfortunately you have not awards a Clarendon scholarship.

Clarendon Scholarship Awards Details
The following awards are available to all of the applicants who are applying for the Clarendon scholarship:-
- Clarendon scholarships cover course fees in full.
- This applies to Home and Overseas fee status students.
- Scholars on a full-time course will receive an annual grant for living expenses of at least the minimum Research Council doctoral stipend rate, which is normally sufficient to cover the living costs of a single student living in Oxford. In 2021-22, you should expect to receive at least £15,609.
- Scholars on a part-time course will receive a study support grant, to assist with non-fee costs. Study support grants vary — they may be a sixth, a third or half of the UKRI doctoral stipend rate. The amount of the grant is influences by the nature and/or duration of the course. A scholar’s offer letter will provide details of the study support grant.
- The study support grant may be slightly reduced where course fees cover some other study costs, for example, accommodation while on a period of residential study. We liaise with academic departments to determine the value of the study support grant in these cases.
- Clarendon scholarships are normally offer for the full period of fee liability. This is the period for which you are liable to pay course fees to the University. The fee liability page explains this in full, and also gives information about charges that may apply after this period, known as continuation charges, which are not cover by the Clarendon Fund.
- In some cases, the academic division has the discretion to extend your scholarship to cover an additional period of study where the course is to require additional time. The extension period applies to living expenses only and not to any continuation charges. Scholars will be notified in their offer letter if an extension to funding is provided.
Selection Procedure

- An excellent academic record is essential. The majority of successful scholars usually have at least a first-class honors degree or its equivalent. The applicant must have an outstanding academic record at the Master’s level, noting that an exceptional Master’s degree can compensate for a moderate first-degree performance.
- Requirements may vary between disciplines and from year to year depending on the strength of the field. Other evidence of high academic achievement may include individual marks on student transcripts; evidence of previous university prizes or awards; information on your overall position within your cohort; and publications (if applicable).
- Particular consideration is provide to an applicant’s future academic potential and aptitude for the proposed course of study. This may assess by reviewing references and research proposals to determine evidence of an applicant’s aptitude for research, and the likelihood of contributing significantly to the field of study.
- This is assess through evidence of the applicant’s commitment to the propose course as well as evaluation of the personal statement and the referees’ reports.
Eligibility Criteria
The applicant must follow the following eligibility criteria to be eligible for this scholarship scheme:-
- The applicant must have taken admitted to a full-time or a part-time degree program for the course of DPhil and Masters.
- The applicant must have taken admitted before January.
- The applicant must have a minimum GPA score of 3.7 out of 4
