About Harvard Lead Fellowship 2023

In an effort to equip and empower more women leaders in global health, the Harvard Global Health Institute and the Women and Health Initiative at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health offers a transformational fellowship specifically designed to promote leadership skills in individuals from low- and middle-income countries who will, in turn, mentor future female leaders in global health. Harvard LEAD Fellows receive access to world-class academics, senior mentors, and the ability to create a personalized curriculum that is aligned with their personal growth and leadership goals. 

LEAD Fellows participate in personalized leadership training programs, speaking and networking opportunities, and independent project work based on their individual interests and leadership ambitions. The fellowship provides a once-in-a-lifetime chance to develop a worldwide network of peers and ties throughout Harvard University’s colleges and departments. The fellowship program allows global health experts to reflect, re-calibrate, and go into unexplored territory. The LEAD fellowship program for the years 2023 will commence virtually during the autumn semester, from September through December 2022. Fellows will meet electronically during the fall semester to establish their own personal growth and leadership plans.

Objective of Harvard Lead Fellowship 

The Harvard Global Health Institute and the Women and Health Initiative at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health offer a transformational fellowship specifically designed to promote leadership skills in individuals from low- and middle-income countries who will, in turn, mentor future female leaders in global health.  Harvard University has an important role to play in setting and executing the agenda for a healthier future for all. At HGHI, they harness the expertise of all of Harvard’s graduate schools, hospitals, and our partners around the world as we convene diverse perspectives, draw in new voices, and drive innovation. 

Benefits of Harvard Lead Fellowship

  • During the spring 2023 semester, fellows will receive a living stipend during their time in-residence, (January through May).
  • Visa fees, housing costs, flights to and from Cambridge, MA, and all course fees are also provided by the fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria 

They welcome applicants from all continents, regions, disciplines, sectors, gender, and gender identities. Candidates nominate themselves by applying for the fellowship. There are no age limits or academic prerequisites.

  • Applicants must work full-time in the field of global health and have at least 15 years of professional experience. Global-health-related work completed as a university student does not count as professional experience.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Applicants must have the full support of their employer and a champion in their organization who serves as an internal mentor.
  • The applicants must take a leave of absence (or equivalent) from their home institution during the spring full curriculum semester.
  • Applicants must be able to obtain a J-1 visa for travel to the United States in spring 2023 and must be able to reside in Cambridge, MA from January – to May 2023. NOTE: Visas, housing, and flights will be covered under the fellowship and a living stipend will be provided for the months in residence.
  • During the two years prior to arrival at Harvard, the fellows should not have participated in a full-time fellowship that lasted 4 months or longer.

A highly personalized program, the fellowship is tailored to fit the unique goals and aspirations of each of our Fellows. Over a 12-month period, Fellows will have access to world-class faculty, classes, and executive education programs that will encourage and challenge them in new, inspiring ways.
